If I loved my neighbor

If I loved my neighbor as I love myself, here’s what it might look like:

  • I might snap out an unkind comment before I gave it much thought.
  • I could judge everything she does by impossible standards.
  • I would make impossible demands on her time and energy.
  • Too often, I would withhold approval, warmth, the benefit of the doubt.

If I loved myself as I love my neighbor… family members… best friends…  co-workers, here’s what it might look like:

  • I might acknowledge it when I’ve been a positive force in someone’s life.
  • I would cut myself some slack when I’m overworked and overwhelmed.
  • When I’m discouraged, I could remind myself that I’m loved.
  • I could point out the abundance and grace in my life.

  1. Or just remind yourself of how many of us love & admire you for who you are, with all your quirks or eccentricities And how we are always glad to be in your presence. That is why I hang out with people I do they remind me of that despite all the junk my mind wants to “share” with me.

  2. Quirks? Eccentricities? Me? You must have me confused with some other slightly-neurotic-but-working-on-her-stuff person in your life.

Seriously, Jim, thank you. You’re right — the only way I can know the truth about myself is to listen for the same message coming at me over and over from different people. Then try to accept what they seem to see. Because I will look myself in the eye and lie every time, in the name of owning my stuff, being fearless and searching. And gradually, I am learning to treat myself with more compassion. What a concept.
